A proof-of-concept where the player switches between two low-poly environments: a jungle and a beach.
PROOF OF CONCEPTHolodeck is a compact environment-switching demo inspired by the classic sci-fi training room. The player stands on a central platform and can toggle between two low-poly biomes: a dense jungle and a sunny beach. The goal is to test scene swapping, locomotion across different terrains, and environmental ambience inside a single Steam Frame build.
Download ARM64 BinaryThick vegetation, uneven ground, and dappled lighting. Used to test walking on sloped terrain, dense object placement, and darker, moodier lighting.
Open sand, calm water, and bright daylight. Used to test wide sightlines, flat locomotion, and a relaxed, open-world feel.
Environments are swapped with remove_child and
add_child rather than simply toggling visibility.
This stops rendering, physics, and _process updates
for the inactive scene, which keeps performance predictable on
the Steam Frame's mobile renderer. Each environment also has its
own ambience track that fades in when the scene becomes active.
A small control panel floats in front of the player. Pressing a button or pointing and pulling the trigger swaps the active environment instantly, with a brief transition flash to mask the swap and reinforce the holodeck fantasy.
The next iteration will add a third environment, improve the transition effect, and introduce a simple objective in each biome โ for example, collecting a token or reaching a viewpoint โ so the switch feels purposeful rather than purely cosmetic.
